I will share with you my views and thoughts on proper guitar posture and finding the for your comfortable and ergonomic guitar playing.

As a guitarist and composer, posture and sitting correctly was only something I learned in the last couple of years but I wish it was something that I had learned a long time ago. The reason I wish I learned good guitar posture and invested in a guitar stool earlier is because by doing so, I have improved my playing in all aspects of the guitar as an instrument.

Before I discuss some of the benefits of good guitar posture I thought it was important to discuss how to buy a guitar stool and what to look for when buying a guitar stool.

Buying the right Guitar Stool

What are some of the things to look for you may be wondering? Essentially we can split this up into three headings to help us decide which guitar stool is for you:

  • Comfortability
  • Added backrest & other extras
  • Portability

lets dive right into these points

guitar stool

This refers to how comfortable the guitar stool is to sit on and use. If you are going to be playing and practicing guitar for hours, then it is highly recommended that you get yourself a very comfortable guitar stool with extra padding. This will allow you to sit and practice for longer without doing any physical damage to yourself and without compromising your body. My guitar stool is heavily padded so that I can play and practice for much longer than I ever could before.

Added Backrest & Extra’s¬†

This options is completely up to you and your personal taste. I opted for a guitar stool with a backrest however, it is important not to fall into the trap of using the a backrest as a crutch. When sitting on a guitar stool, proper posture must be maintained, the backrest should be set up in such a way that it does not comprise your correct posture position but rather, facilitates the correct sitting and playing position for guitarists. You can also get guitar stools with footrests. For me, I like a footrest and it gives me the option of both. This is completely up to the guitarists as to what he/she wants.

Some guitar stools have added extras such as guitar stands. So they serve two functions in one unit. The extra’s should be looked at as bonuses and should not persuade your buying decision as these extras do not improve posture.

You have to ask yourself the question regarding portability. I.e will the guitar stool be going out to gigs and or practices with you or will it be staying in one place. This is an important question because many guitar stools fold up so that you can transport them and store them. The portability factor is not a major concern because it does not impact posture or playing. It is just something to take into account when buying a guitar stool.

How good posture and a guitar stool improved my playing

As I mentioned, getting a guitar stool helped improve my posture and thus I was able to focus on practicing and playing the guitar for a much longer period of time than ever before. I used to get back and neck pain from practicing the guitar but this was due to the wrong position and wrong chair in which I was sitting.

Investing in a good quality guitar stool is the best thing you can do for yourself as a guitar player. It won’t be long before you see the benefits of good guitar posture.
